About the Venue

Drakes Island sits in the waters a short distance from Plymouth coast, known as the Plymouth Sound. Historically, the island has been used for war and defence - Tudor and Napoleonic coastal defences, then WW1 and WW2 military fortifications. In living history the island has been ‘out of bounds’ to visitors, with the exception for a brief period in the 1980s when used as an activity centre.

The Island is riddled with underground service tunnels, subterranean chambers, disused gun batteries, forgotten munition stores, and defensive structures. It is often rumoured Drakes Island is connected to Plymouth by undersea tunnel - It’s not! The island has enough tunnels and passageways to explore as it is.

Disused buildings and cannon casements form the abandoned structures seen on the surface. Long gone are earlier features recorded in the history books. With all the layers of history and activity we find tales of the supernatural. Echoes of the past or active spirits? You decide.

F A Q

  • Do I stay with friends? - Yes, but we will divide attendees into teams of people for the events activities.
  • What time does it start? - Evenings - Times Vary Slightly - Please arrive in time for departure as the Ferry Boat will NOT wait - be at the Landing Jetty with plenty of time and board 10 or 5 mins before departure. Check ticket bookings for times
  • What about the weather? - This is an any weather event, half of it indoors. If travel conditions cancel the Ferry, we reserve the right to reschedule. Dress appropriately.
  • Do I need to check-in? - Yes. On arrival you'll be assigned to a team, and told where you'll start the evenings events.
  • Is there parking? - Yes, around the Plymouth barbican area. Check the Travel section for more.
  • Public Transport? - Plymouth can be reached by Train. Bus services pass the Barbican and Landing Stage
  • Will I see a ghost? - We can't guarantee what people may see or feel, we can only hope.
  • Can I take photos/video? - Yes, please do, but please don't take Flash Photos during dark investigations, as the flash will blind others.
  • Can I bring my dog / Pet? - No, sorry. We love animals but some may not - Unfortunately please do not bring pets to events. With paranormal experiments and people moving about in semi darkness, and wildlife on the Island, it's unfair on the animals and the other attendees, sorry.
  • What about mobility? - The tour and ghost investigation will take people on walks around derelict building via stairs, slopes and uneven ground, all in semi darkness on wet and dry ground. This reduces mobility access. As such, please plan according. Drakes Island is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible or similar.
  • What if I get frightened? - If you want to leave an area, simply speak to the nearest event team member at any time.
  • Will I be on filmed/on camera? - Yes, there is at times Night Vision and CCTV for safety reasons. We may stream footage and show photographs taken; Buying a ticket is part of consenting to being on camera.
